Wildlife Management Student 2023/2024
Edin Turana Taki was born in 2002 at Endoinyio Erinka village, Pardamat Conservation Area (PCA). He has a single parent, two older brothers and other seven young siblings.
In 2005 as he tended to his parent’s sheep, he fell down and unfortunately broke his upper arm. The injury was very serious and became worse due to lack of good nearby hospitals. The hand was swollen and therefore he was taken to Tenwek Hospital. Due to the seriousness of the injury, the surgeons decided for amputation.
Despite the odds against him, in 2007 he started schooling at Endoinyio Erinka Primary School and later transferred to Adcam Mara Vision School. He experienced many challenges while schooling such as washing of clothes, and harassment from other students. These challenges motivated him to work hard and succeed in my studies.
In 2017, he joined Mulot Secondary School for his secondary education. Although the Covid19 pandemic interrupted studies, he completed in 2021. While at secondary school, it was not that easy for him especially during science practical in the laboratory because with one arm, it became so difficult to do that and on time. However, he sat for his secondary level national exams and successfully got the results in 2021.
In 2022, he applied for an opportunity to join Wildlife Tourism College (WTC) of Maasai Mara. After a series of interviews, he was selected to pursue Diploma in Wildlife Management. Turana is passionate about wildlife and therefore it was easy for him to choose Wildlife Management so that he can advocate for conservation of the wildlife for mutual benefits.
He says “I live in Pardamat Conservation Area where some of the big five animals are found. It is also a home for cats and elephants. My mission is to protect and conserve wildlife as well as educate the local people on the importance of conserving and living with wildlife. In Pardamat, we practice conservation and also livestock keeping activities. Since PCA came up with such a conservation model, human-wildlife conflict has been significantly reduced. It is my dream that I will continue learning more on how to enhance harmonious living of both human and wildlife”

As the story goes, the VIPs were mesmerized by the immense knowledge, skill and passion for nature and conservation that was evident from the graduates. The President inquired how the young men acquired all the knowledge about wildlife. And so the
story of the College and the awareness of the Impact of the College by the dignitaries starts. This awareness we hope to nurture and use to grow the College as support from the highest level of government is assured.
